    3 current roles -

    Research Associate

    The Role

    We have an immediate opportunity for a dedicated individual to join us as a Research Associate, reporting to the Staff Scientist.  This is a permanent, full-time laboratory-based role.  You will work in our Ottawa office five days a week.

    In this role, you will carry out research to convert lignocellulosic materials into renewable fuels, with the goal of increasing the cost efficiency of our processes.  You will be responsible for executing bench scale experiments, data analysis and presentation of results.

    You will provide routine analytical laboratory support for research, manufacturing or customer support projects or operations.

    Job Responsibilities

    • Conduct, analyze, and troubleshoot laboratory experiments, primarily working with lignocellulosic materials    

    • Perform routine and non-routine quantitative analyses using a variety of analytical instruments and laboratory assays      

    • Critically analyze data and report results to the research team      

    • Maintain laboratory equipment and supplies

    • Follow work plans as assigned by supervisor and execute laboratory experiments or assays      

    • Analyze data and provide preliminary interpretation of results to supervisor, with suggestions for next step.  Present results to the supervisor or within the unit operation. Results are reviewed by the supervisor before final release.

    • Exercise technical judgment for defined or standard laboratory procedures and practices in order to set up will defined experiments

    • Responsible for maintenance of some specified laboratory equipment.  Shares general lab cleaning duties with others.  Maintains laboratory reagents and inventory
    • Provides general laboratory support to others.  This may include the preparation of reagents
    • Understand, follow and comply with health & safety hazards in the workplace.  Immediately report all incidents and hazards.  Take reasonable steps to protect your and your co-worker's health and safety

    Qualifications      

    • B.Sc. in Biochemistry or diploma in Biotechnical Technology with relevant experience in a biochemistry role
    • Strong problem-solving skills and aptitude for critical analysis
    • Laboratory experience operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining analytical and spectroscopic equipment such as HPLC, UV-Vis, FTIR and EA
    • Demonstrate effective communication skills, both written and verbal
    • Ability to adapt to rapidly changing corporate focuses and industry dynamics, being flexible and efficient in the fast-paced industry environment
    • Experience with anaerobic digestion an asset
    • Mechanical aptitude is required

    Technology Plant Operator

      The Role

      We have an immediate opportunity for a dedicated individual to join us as a Technology Plant Operator, reporting to the Staff Scientist Manager. You will work closely with the Operations Specialist, who will provide day-to-day guidance.

      This role is an exciting opportunity for someone with a solid understanding of mechanical systems and an openness to learn about the chemistry and production of low carbon fuels.

      This is a permanent, full-time role. You will work at our Ottawa location five days a week.

      Job Responsibilities

      In this role, you will be responsible for investigating fiber processing and anaerobic digestion in a small-scale pilot plant setting.

      This is not a routine plant manufacturing role. You will execute process runs, collect data and collaborate with team members to validate new procedures, troubleshoot issues, identify and implement solutions and improve processes.      

      • Set up, operate, and monitor pilot-scale equipment and systems (reactors, filtration, grinding units, etc.) to support process development and scale-up objectives      

      • Execute process protocols derived from lab-scale experiments, adapting them for pilot equipment and supporting the identification of critical scale-dependent behaviors      

      • Collaborate with scientists and process engineers to optimize experimental runs, provide feedback on equipment behavior, and suggest improvements      

      • Ensure rigorous documentation of operational steps, observations, and deviations in both paper and digital log

      • Maintain cleanliness, calibration, and readiness of pilot-scale equipment, machinery or instrumentation, identifying signs of wear or malfunction      

      • Follow safety protocols rigorously.  Understand, follow and comply with health & safety hazards in the workplace.  Immediately report all incidents and hazards.  Take reasonable steps to protect you and your co-workers' health and safety      

      • Respond to alarms and abnormal conditions with critical thinking and swift action, both on-site and on-call

      Qualifications      

      • Diploma, certificate or degree in a relevant field; or equivalent hands-on experience
      • 2 - 4 years plant operations experience in chemical, biochemical, or biotech industries including:
        • Experience operating within R&D (research & development) or pilot-scale environments rather than full-scale production
        • Proficient with troubleshooting and operating mechanical equipment
        • Prior exposure to process scale-up, technology transfer, or process intensification
        • Ability to identify and communicate unexpected process behavior—both verbally and in writing  
        • Must be able to lift 20 - 30 Kg
      • Forklift or rigging/hoist certification will be considered an asset

      Skills

      • Familiar with control systems (DCS or PLC-based interfaces) and instrumentation
      • Ability to understand, troubleshoot and solve mechanical problems      
      • Competent in basic data analysis and clearly communicating findings      
      • Comfortable with ambiguity, iteration, and learning as part of process refinement      
      • Familiar with the Microsoft applications suite (Word, Excel)      
      • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail and an aptitude for critical analysis      
      • Ability to adapt to rapidly changing corporate focuses and industry dynamics, being flexible and efficient in the fast-paced industry environment    
      • Curiosity about anaerobic digestion and a drive to learn and contribute to practical solution

      Work Environment

      • Regular day shifts from Monday to Friday, with occasional off-hour and/or weekend duties to support research needs      
      • Be prepared for standing and walking for extended periods      
      • Workloads may vary but can expect a balance of 70% plant work, with 30% analytical analysis and desk-based tasks

      • Mid-50s to low-60s

      Senior Refinery & Sustainability Engineer

        We are focussed on the science and technology of producing abundant, affordable low-carbon fuels.  We develop, build, and operate supply chains that combine the use of biomethane, carbon capture and fuel synthesis to make low-carbon fuels that work in today's cars, trucks, and airplanes.  We are a pioneer in the industry with a track record of successful innovation and have developed an extensive portfolio of patents and intellectual property that we deploy through partnerships.

        The Role

        We have an immediate opportunity for a dedicated individual to join us as a Senior Refinery & Sustainability Engineer, reporting to the Chief Development Officer. This is a permanent, full-time role.  This is a hybrid role based in our Ottawa office, where you will work a minimum of two days a week.  Working remotely will require you to have reliable internet access and a home office that provides for a productive, professional and safe work environment during regular working hours.  To be successful in this role and in a hybrid work environment, you will need to be a proactive communicator, be a self-starter and have strong time management and organizational skills.

        The Senior Refinery & Sustainability Engineer provides technical expertise and support relating to the implementation of our proprietary technology to make renewable fuels in refineries using biomethane as a feedstock.  

        Responsibilities Include:

        • Analyses of process systems and operational data,
        • Recommendations for deployment strategies for optimal yields,
        • Development and implementation of systems for measurement and tracking,
        • Analysis, tracking, and reporting of GHG emissions from operations,
        • Development of (and/or support for) registrations and certifications of operations,
        • Selection, scheduling and oversight of pipeline transfer operations,
        • Planning, selection, and supervision of contractors performing similar work,
        • As workload grows, training and supervision of staff, including stewardship of procedures,
        • Leadership or support of special projects, and
        • Troubleshooting and optimization as required to support the business.

        Health, Safety & Environment Responsibilities    

        • As an employee of iogen, understand the hazards in the workplace and perform work in compliance with applicable legislations, regulations, corporate procedures, facility health, safety and environmental rules, safe work practices and procedures.  This includes (but is not limited to):

        Qualifications and Skills

        • Bachelor's degree in engineering or similar
        • Five to ten years' experience working with or at a refinery.  Knowledge of typical refinery operations and production processes is essential.
        • Experience in environmental compliance management
        • Ability to communicate effectively with customers, both internally and externally
        • Must be a team player that possesses the ability to adapt to a changing and fast paced multi-teamwork environment.
        • An entrepreneurial spirit and a curious mind

        Other Requirements

        • Role is Ottawa based
        • Hybrid workplace: work from home up to 3 days per week (this may change)
        • Travel: as required to collect data and meet with partners
